Tennis Fashion Fix

Situated in Indian Wells , Renaissance Esmeralda Indian Wells Resort & Spa is a family-friendly resort in the desert and close to Indian Wells Tennis Garden , making it a popular choice among the tennis players and fans travelling to the desert for the BNP Paribas Open. Maria Sharapova and Jelena Ristic were not the only members of the tennis family who decided to stay in New York following the conclusion of the US Open and indulge in fashion activities of the New York Fashion Week. Novak Djokovic 's girlfriend, Jelena Ristic , is starting to turn some heads in the fashion World. Since she's been spotted with Vogue's editor in-chief Anna Wintour at both New York editions of Novak Djokovic Foundation Gala and the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York City , it's not a huge surprise to see Jelena appear in Vogue Flash right before the US Open. Maria Sharapova celebrated the 1st anniversary of her candy line by teaming up with Henri Bendel to create a Sugarpova-inspired clothing and accessory line which she officially launched in New York City on August 20, 2013, just days prior to withdrawing from the final Grand Slam of the year, the US Open, due to a shoulder injury. Just like last year, when she was officially introducing Sugarpova to the World, Maria opted for a David Koma dress (Fall 2013 Collection) for the launch party.The blue/black organza tulip dress with a sheer front and nude bodice underneath made for a stunning look, completed by the Rupert Sanderson Winona patent leather pumps in black, a Graziela Gems ring , and Sugarpova earrings . As the Canadian Davis Cup Team battles Serbia in Belgrade in the World Group Semi Final , we look back at the Americas Group I ties Canada played on it's way to the current state of affairs. In March of 2009, Canadian team of Frank Dancvic , Frederic Niemeyer and Daniel Nestor ( Milos Raonic as the alternate) faced Ecuador (including the Lapentti brothers, Nicolas and Giovanni ) at the indoor facility at the Rexall Centre in Toronto in the Americas Zone I play-off tie. Canada lead 2-1 heading into the Sunday matches and should never have lost, but somehow did, in the fourth and deciding rubber which saw Dancevic waste two match points and eventually lose to the veteran Nicolas Lappentti. Niemeyer had a chance to give his team the win in the 5th and final rubber but ended up losing to the younger Lappenti brother, Giovanni, in a hard-fought 4- set battle.  Sunday results Nicolas LAPENTTI (#1 ECU) def. During my recent, and first ever, trip to New York, I visited the 9/11 Memorial . Today, on the 12th anniversary of that dark day, here's my visit to the site seen through the lens of my camera.

Maria Sharapova was a busy girl during the New York Fashion Week . She attended the Phillip Lim for Target runway show, 10th annual Style Awards, joined Ana Wintour and Alicia Keys and Jessica Pare at the Jason Wu show and attended a Porsche Party . Interesting how Maria mixed up her looks during the Fashion Week. From a chic in a navy skater skirt from the Phillip Lim for Target collection, matching sweater and white court shoes at the Lim show to a long-sleeved, black A-line frock dress featuring sheer, floral lace around the neckline at the Wu event and a simple, chic little black dress at the Porsche event. Calling all Toronto-area tennis fans. adidas Canada is having a Tent Sale at their headquarters in Woodbridge, Ontario (8100 Highway 27). The Sale starts today, September 10, and will last through Sunday, September 15. Other featured brands will include Reebok , TaylorMade and Rockport . No word on whether any on-court tennis apparel will be available but the sale might be worth a try.

Novak Djokovic Foundation held it's 2nd annual fundraising Gala at Capitale in New York City on Tuesday, September 10, 2013. Novak Djokovic and his girlfriend and the Executive Director of the Foundation, Jelena Ristic (wearing Wes Gordon ) both gave speeches on the ongoing projects and goals of their non-profit organization. The Foundation announced this morning the event raised $2,500,000 that will be used in accordance with its mission statement to: "provide encouragement and resources to young children so they can fulfil and nurture their dreams.". The dinner was attended by Naomi Campbell, Adriana Lima, Kate Hudson, Goldie Hawn, Milutin Gatsby, Donna Karan, Tommy Hilfiger, Jimmy Connors and John McEnroe, among others. The highlight of our Labour Day trip to the NYC came on Monday night, after hours of rain delays, in the form on the Round of 16 match between Richard Gasquet and Milos Raonic on Court 17. Raonic led two sets to one, was up a break in the fourth set and later had a match point in the tiebreak, but the match ended up going the distance before Gasquet won 6-7 (4), 7-6 (4), 2-6, 7-6 (9), 7-5. Nova Djokovic (in UNIQLO) vs Joao Sousa , 6-0 6-2 6-2. Sadly, this was the only match we got to see while in NYC and my camera battery died soon after the warm up, so not too much variety here. I guess that was a message from the Tennis Gods to put the camera down, sit back and enjoy the beauty of Novak's game since the result was never in doubt. Photos from the Ana Ivanovic vs Christina McHale (both sponsored by adidas ) 3rd Round US Open match. Ivanovic won 4-6 7-5 6-4 and moved on to the next round to face Vikroria Azarenka. That match was scheduled on Monday, our last day at the Open, but due to the lenghty rain delay ended up being played the following day. As a result, these are the only photos of Ana we have.

Welcome to the US Open Arthur Ashe Stadium, view from Armstrong The Unisphere of Flushing Meadows Park

Our first session on Arthur Ashe Stadium turned out to be quite an experience as we got to experience a 5-set match under the lights ( Lleyton Hewitt upset Juan Martin del Potro 6-4 5-7 3-6 7-6(2) 6-1). Just prior to that we accidentally found ourselves in the stands of Court 7 where Evgeny Donskoy was on his way to defeating Peter Gojowczyk , also in 5 sets (6-4 5-7 3-6 7-6(2) 6-1). Our headquarters for the US Open adventure was the Walldorf Astoria , one of the tournament host properties. The Tennis Channel Flag was proudly flying outside our window. Definitely a constant reminder of the main purpose of the trip. The hotel itself couldn't be more lovely. I could spend hours telling you how beautiful it was so just have a look by yourselves.
