Canadian Davis Cup History: Canada vs Ecuador in 2009
As the Canadian Davis Cup Team battles Serbia in Belgrade in the World Group Semi Final, we look back at the Americas Group I ties Canada played on it's way to the current state of affairs.
In March of 2009, Canadian team of Frank Dancvic, Frederic Niemeyer and Daniel Nestor (Milos Raonic as the alternate) faced Ecuador (including the Lapentti brothers, Nicolas and Giovanni) at the indoor facility at the Rexall Centre in Toronto in the Americas Zone I play-off tie. Canada lead 2-1 heading into the Sunday matches and should never have lost, but somehow did, in the fourth and deciding rubber which saw Dancevic waste two match points and eventually lose to the veteran Nicolas Lappentti.
Niemeyer had a chance to give his team the win in the 5th and final rubber but ended up losing to the younger Lappenti brother, Giovanni, in a hard-fought 4- set battle.
